The continuation of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War came on April 26th with the release of the much awaited and anticipated Avengers: Endgame. Fans of the MCU have been left hanging since April of last year for the answers to so many questions. Are many of their favorite characters still alive? If so, can they be brought back? Who was Nick Fury paging at the end of the movie? Some answers were given with the release of both Captain Marvel and Ant Man and the Wasp but a lot is still left up in the air.
To refresh, spoiler alert coming if you didn’t already realize what you’re reading, Infinity War left us with the deaths of many new and older characters. With Thanos’ snap to wipe out half the population we saw many heroes fall, including new faces such as T’challa, Peter Parker and Bucky Barnes (who was and old face but had just recently returned). This left Earth’s mightiest heroes feeling quite helpless and saddened by their loss. Following the release of Infinity War, Marvel also released two pivotal movies that many did not yet realize would have such an impact on the plot of Endgame. Antman and the Wasp as well as Captain Marvel gave us many clues for what to expect for for Endgame. The quantum study that Ant Man and the Wasp brought played a major role in the plot of Endgame as this was the used for the Avengers time travel plan. Then the further backstory and history of Carol Danvers helped fans understand what Nick Fury’s last minute page meant at the very end of Infinity War.
Overall, the three hours that I, along with many other viewers, spent in the theatre was able to bring a heartfelt end to over ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To further explain this let’s go over a few stats of Endgame. For biggest opening weekend, Endgame destroyed the previously set record that Avengers Infinity War set at $640 million just one year ago with an astonishing $1.2 billion open and an estimated $350 million of that coming from the US alone. It set a record in China as well where is brought in an estimated $330 million. Not all fans had the same experience though, such as one man in Hong Kong who apparently spoiled the ending by loudly yelling out a few key plot features. After he did so a line of fans apparently “roughed” him up and he can be seen in the photo below getting treated for wounds he received. Personally I tried to stay off social media as much as I could on Friday to avoid any and all spoilers that could arise on my feed.
With the success the movie has already gained, many fans and movie addicts ask i it will be able to become the highest grossing film ever. Ten years ago the cinematic world saw the highest grossing film ever, Avatar, bring in a record $2.78 billion and with Endgame already sitting quite comfortable at $1.2 billion for its opening weekend, nothing is off the table. Money aside, I believe that most fans were able to get a great end to arguably one of the best movies series ever made.
