In 2016, a white man chased down a young black man in his jeep and killed him. Just recently, a judged sentenced Russell Courtier to life in prison for the racially motivated murder of 19 year old Larnell Bruce Jr. Courtier won’t have the possibility of parole for at least another 28 years.
Coutier is a member of a gang called European Kindred. The gang is a white supremacist prison group based mostly in Oregon corrections system.
According to the prosecution, the two men had gotten into a physical fight outside of a convenience store in Gresham, Oregon on August 10, 2016. Bruce tried to leave the area but was chased down by Courtier in his jeep. Police responded to a hit and run call and found Bruce on the scene with critical injuries. Bruce then later died from those injuries at a nearby hospital.
The jury found Courtier guilty of felony hit and run, murder, and intimidation. In Oregon, intimidation is considered to be a hate crime. Prosecutors had argued that the reason Courtier killed Bruce was due to his skin color.
Courtiers girlfriend also pleaded guilty to a count of manslaughter, as well as aiding Courtier in the murder. She had admitted of letting Courtier use her Jeep to chase down Bruce. Girlfriend Colleen Hunt has received a 10 year sentence, reported by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
