On Easter Sunday morning 2019, Kanye West performed his much anticipated Sunday Service in front of over 50,000 fans. West sat atop a man made mountain at California’s famous Coachella music festival, accompanying him were numerous famous faces in pop culture including Chance the Rapper, Teyana Taylor, Kid Cudi, DMX and 2 Chainz just to name a few. West also brought along a massive gospel choir and a full band.
West had a banner year in 2018 releasing five albums that he was either on or had helped produced. In addition to this he also had said he would be releasing another album in November of last year, which was a much awaited sequel to his album “Yeezus” called “Yandhi.” Sadly he decided to take some time away from the spotlight and delayed the album’s release. The in February we got a glimpse into a side of West that we weren’t quite aware of.
West’s wife Kim Kardashian gave us a glimpse of the first Sunday Service, which was a gospel concert that West had been holding in secret locations of the Calabasas hills. Fans got to see classic Kanye songs such as “Power”, “Ultralight Beam” and “Gold Digger” sung in a choir setting with West mixing along. We had gotten a glimpse into this side of West from his last few albums that sampled many gospel songs such as the intro to ‘Father Stretch My Hands’ and a song from his latest album with Kid Cudi called ‘Reborn’ that gave hints West may have went through a spiritual awakening.
Now to Kanye’s Easter Sunday Service, the “concert” began around 9 in the morning and lasted for over 3 hours. It included snippets and gospel renditions classic West songs like “Lift Yourself,” “All Falls Down,” “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1,” “Otis,” “Power,” “Ultralight Beam” and “Jesus Walks.” West also introduced a new song “Water” that included these obvious spiritual lyrics “Let your light reflect on me/Take the glory, not our conversation/I know I might not be as perfect as Christ/But we’re made up of 90 percent water.” So the question we now must ask is, has Kanye become an “awakened” Christian or is just not afraid of what the public may think?
West may even be having some effects on those close to him. In Chance the Rapper’s verse on “Ultralight Beam” he added the line “Please don’t forget about Christ” and refrained from using any vulgar language during the singing. DMX,a known reborn Christian, also led the crowd in prayer.
On West’s famous track “Jesus Walks” this verse may lead us to believe that West is done with the media and friends telling him what he can and can’t do, so now he is free and showing his true colors.
They said you can rap about anything except for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, video tape
But if I talk about God my record won’t get played
Well let this take away from my spins
Which will probably take away from my ends
Then I hope this take away from my sins
And bring the day that I’m dreaming about
Overall West’s Sunday Service will definitely be one to remember and go down in his illustrious and eccentric history.
