Kayleigh Mae Hogan has peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the age of 14. Surrounded by her family, pets, and in her mother’s arms, Kayleigh finally earned her angel wings after battling with different types of cancer for 6 years, since the age of 8. She has left behind her mom, dad and three siblings, Shayla, Cameron and Brendan Many of Kayleigh’s famous idols have reached out to her via video to send her positive vibes. Some of these famous people include, Dwayne Johnson AKA ‘The Rock’, Ed Sheeran and Mark Wahlberg. Zdeno Chara, Kayleigh’s favorite player from the National Hockey League sent her a signed jersey as a gift. A player from the National Football League, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, Andy Dalton also gave her a personalized jersey with her name on it that he had signed.
She has been battling leukemia since 2014 and had graduated from chemotherapy, when it had relapsed for another time, now making her fight two times harder. She had bone marrow results that had come back showing leukemic cells in her bone marrow at 10%. On February 15, 2019, Kayleigh was in remission and on the 19th, she was able to come home from the hospital. But, by February 27, she was back at the hospital once again.
On March 12th, 2019, Kayleigh was put into hospice care at her own home to be surrounded by the love and presence of her family and pets. She was able to fight for her life one month longer than she was expected to and her family often describes her as so, a fighter. A few days before her passing, Kayleigh’s doctors and Hospice team had decided to reduce the steroids she had been taking as they did not seem to be working anymore.
Monday, April 15, Mount Carmel Christian Church held a public visitation for friends and family in the community and Tuesday, April 16 a private funeral was held at E.C. Nurre Funeral Homes in Amelia for family and known friends to attend. A candle lit vigil was held in her honor at West Clermont Middle School, the school in which she had attended on Friday, April 12. Her parents had created a ‘Team Kayleigh’ facebook page for people to stay up to date with Kayleigh’s journey through battling cancer. Pictures, videos and messages had been posted here for people to follow along on this journey with Kayleigh.
