The most prestigious and respected award show of the season has come and gone once again. The Academy Awards, better known as ‘The Oscars’, took place this past weekend at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Attended by the years most talked about actors and actresses, directors and production teams, there was plenty to talk about during the live red carpet and telecast. It seems the most buzz worthy moments were two surprising wins in big categories.
The award for Best Actor and Best Actress are some of the most anticipated, as the hall of fame of these categories include Hollywood legends like Audrey Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and over 50 other household names. Both categories this year had stiff competition, Best Actor nominees including Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, and Willem Dafoe. The audience didn’t seem surprised when Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek walked away with the win, as he has won multiple awards for his role as Freddie Mercury. It was the Best Actress category that many were shocked by. Nominees included Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy, Yalitza Aparicio, Olivia Colman, and Glenn Close. Many fans expected it to come down to Lady Gaga’s performance in ‘A Star is Born’ or Glenn Close’s role in ‘The Wife’, the underdog being Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio. It turned out in a way many didn’t expect as Olivia Colman was announced as the winner for her role of Queen Anne in ‘The Favorite’.
The second major upset of the night was for the biggest category of the night, Best Picture. The films up for the award included BlaKkKlansman, Black Panther, Roma, Vice, A Star is Born, Green Book, The Favorite, and Bohemian Rhapsody. While there wasn’t a clear front runner, there were many fan favorites, A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Roma, that fans were hoping would take the win. That is why it was surprising for many when the cast of Green Book was announced as the winner, some even being disappointed by the result. Director Spike Lee went as far to walk out of the theatre, saying “they made a bad call”, referring to the Academy’s decision.
The Oscars mark the end of the major award show season, but new movies, tv shows, and music will continue gracing the industry throughout the year. And many can guess that more surprising moments will happen during next year’s season.
