A shooting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has left eleven dead and six injured. This shooting took place in a synagogue called ‘Tree of Life’, during a worship practice. This synagogue is located in what’s known as the heart of the local Jewish community. The shooter was said to be posting threats online and seemed to only target the Jews. The last post before the shooting happened said, “HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.” The shooters name was Robert Bowers, a 46-year-old. After having a shootout with the Pittsburgh police, Bowers surrendered after being injured and was taken into custody. During this gunfight, he told one officer: “They’re committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews”. Federal prosecutors are looking to approve on the death penalty against Bowers.
There has been 297 mass shootings in the United States this year with two months left until the New Year. The weapons involved in this shooting were an AR-15 and three handguns. President Trump and first lady, Melania Trump will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday to express the support of the American people and grieve with the Pittsburgh community. Trump will explain how there would be a different outcome of this shooting if there had been an armed guard outside of the building.
