Is there anywhere safe? Tragedy has hit close to home after a fatal shooting occurred Thursday, September 6, at the Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati’s Fountain Square.
At least 3 men have been killed along with the 29-year-old shooter, Omar Enrique Santa Perez.The men killed have been identified as Luis Felipe Calderon, 48; Pruthvi Raj Kandepi, 25; and Richard Newcomer, 64, according to the Hamilton County Coroner’s office.
The gunman was carrying a pistol and more than 200 rounds of ammunition. Perez’s residence was searched by investigators and no immediate indicator of motive was found.
The shooting began just after 9 a.m. Perez entered a loading dock and opened fire before going into the building’s lobby, where four police officers engaged him and exchanged fire. Perez was not a current or former employee at the center, whose primary tenant is the Fifth Third Bank headquarters.
Security cameras captured the moment Perez began shooting.
One person died at the scene. Two more died at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The wounded were listed there in critical condition and fair condition.
Whitney Austin, 37, was one of the victims that currently remains in stable condition. Austin was wearing headphones and was unable to hear warnings of the shooting. She walked into the bank, straight into the gunman’s line of fire and was shot 12 times.
