On Thursday at Stoneman Douglas High School, a 19 year old former student is suspected for gunning down at least 17 people. This massacre has now become one of the top 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history. Seventeen people were killed, more than a dozen were injured, five with life-threatening wounds.
Nikolas Cruz had been expelled from the school for unspecified disciplinary reasons, formerly described as a loner by one of his classmates. It is believed that to get a higher death rate, the suspect pulled the fire alarm to draw people out. Students had said they had a fire drill earlier in the morning so they thought it was strange when the alarm went off for a second time. The shooting occurred around 2:20 pm and lasted for several minutes. Cruz was armed with a AR-15 style rifle which was purchased legally and no laws were violated in the purchase of this weapon. According to a US official briefed on the investigation, the suspect bought the firearm in the last year and passed the background check to make the purchase of the gun.
Nikolas Cruz’s’ social media profile was described as having “very very disturbing” content. He had a large amount of violence and gun related posts on his media site. Under the name of Nikolas Cruz his posts had comments under videos on Youtube and other sites which included, “I whana shoot people with my AR-15” , “I wanna die Fighting killing s**t ton of people” and “I am going to kill the law enforcement one day they go after the good people.”
His instagram page included a posted picture of a shotgun, he is also shown brandishing a pistol that appears to be a type of BB gun. In another picture he is shown covering his face with a Kerchief, and brandishing long knives.
As far as his family life goes, Cruz was adopted by Lynda Cruz. A little of three months ago however, she died due to battling the flu and pneumonia. His father had died over a decade ago from a heart attack. Nikolas had been living with a family friend since the passing of his mother according to Jim Lewis, a Ft. Lauderdale attorney who represents the family. Cruz was friends with the family’s son who went to the High School. The family is cooperating with the investigation and voluntarily let authorities search their home and have answered questions. They also gave the keys to their house along with their cell phones for search and authorities have a warrant to search Cruz’s room. The family is not speaking to the media at this time.
Aaron Feis, who was the Assistant Football coach and security guard at the school, selflessly shielded students from the shooter. He had suffered a gunshot wound and later had died after being rushed into surgery.
It is only February 15, and this is now the 18th school shooting just this year in the United States.
